**Henrico County, Virginia is situated centrally in the east part of the state, and contains 291 square miles. The surface is undulating, and the soil diversified. Chickahominy River runs on its north east boundary.
Capital, Richmond.
There were in 1840, neat cattle 5,098, sheep 2,454, swine 11,975, wheat 39,095 bushels produced, rye 3,079, Indian corn 247,671, oats 137,543, potatoes 12,189, tobacco 33,300 pounds, cotton 1,234, bituminous coal 1,012,200 bushels; 17 commercial and 29 commission houses, capital $3,632,000; 269 stores with a capital of $1,658,150; 3 lumber yards with a capital of $24,000; 4 furnaces, 8 forges, 1 cotton factorie 5,810 spindles, 6 distilleries, 4 potteries, 21 flouring mills, 19 grist mills, 15 saw mills, 1 paper factorie, 8 printing offices, 2 daily, 6 weekly, 2 semi-weekly newspapers, 1 periodical. Capital in manufactures, $1,334,750.
It has 1 college with 63 students, 17 academies with 934 students, and 37 schools with 928 scholars.
Population: whites 16,900, slaves 13,237, free colored 2,939; total, 33,076.
